The Hero Verdict

It’s a dead heat on location, but the choice is simple: Choose Premier Inn if you’re a business traveler or a couple willing to pay a slight premium for a quieter, more modern room and a better breakfast. Choose the Travelodge for Stag/Hen groups, pet owners, or anyone looking to save every penny for the pub.

The Group Perspective: Stags, Hens & Weekend Blowouts

The Travelodge Edge: This is the undisputed winner for Stag and Hen dos. It’s cheaper and the staff are generally more accustomed to the "group energy" of a Cambridge weekend. The rear access makes it easy for a minibus or multiple taxis to pick up a large group without blocking the chaos of Newmarket Road.

The Premier Inn Edge: If you’re a "Mature" Hen or Stag group that actually wants a decent night's sleep after the clubs, the Premier Inn’s superior soundproofing and modern fit-out are worth the extra cash.

The Family & "Quality" Gap

Premier Inn (The "Better" Build): It is slightly more expensive, but you get what you pay for. The rooms feel fresh, the "Kids Eat Free" breakfast is a major budget-saver for families, and the soundproofing actually works against the $24$-7 traffic noise.

Travelodge (The "Budget" Anchor): It’s older and has that classic "no-frills" feel. If you are just using the room to crash, why pay more? It’s the tactical choice for families with dogs or those who would rather spend their budget at the Beehive Centre or the Blue Moon pub.

The Logistics & Parking "Local" Truth

The Bag Drop: If you’re arriving with a car full of suitcases, the Travelodge is much easier. Use the quiet road at the back. At the Premier Inn, you’re stuck in a tiny, high-stress lay-by on the busy Coldhams Lane junction; it is a nightmare of a start to any trip.

The Parking Hack: Travelodge has tight underground parking (watch those pillars), but you can scout the residential streets behind it for free spots. Premier Inn has an exposed lot and if it’s full, you’re walking further from the free street parking nearby or forced onto the busy Coldhams Lane.

Note that the parking at both hotels do fill up quickly, particularly in the evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I actually walk into the historic Cambridge center from here?

Yes, it’s a $25–30$ minute "urban" walk. Local Hack: Don’t just trudge down Newmarket Road and East Road. Cross the main road (pedestrian crossing just down from the Travelodge), keep straight and head down towards the River Cam ($10$ mins), and walk the towpath through Midsummer Common. It’s a much better way to enter the city and brings you out right by the colleges and the best historic pubs.

I have a transit van/large 4x4/SUV, is the parking really that bad?

At the Travelodge, yes. The underground has a low ceiling and tight corners (unless you're one of the lucky ones that gets the few spaces straight ahead of the entrance. At the Premier Inn, the surface lot is easier to manoeuvre but fills up quickly. If you’re in a van, your best bet is to use the Travelodge rear access to drop your gear, then park on the residential streets like New Street (right behind the Travelodge where there aren’t height restrictions.

Where’s the nearest place to grab a decent pint without walking to the center?

Skip the hotel bars and enjoy one of the many friendly local pubs. Walk $8$ minutes into the backstreets to The Blue Moon. It’s a local institution for craft beer and sourdough pizza. If you want a "proper" local pub feel, The Alex (Alexandra Arms) is just a few streets further and does the best burgers in East Cambridge.
