The Dilemma
Both hotels sit south of Birmingham city centre. Both offer free parking. Both are outside the Clean Air Zone. On paper, they sound like variations on the same theme. In reality, they could not be more different in character, purpose, and the kind of guest they are actually built for.
Pairc House Hotel is the newly built home of Birmingham's Irish Centre, a genuine community institution with a boxing club, a wellbeing centre, a banqueting suite, and a bar that reportedly pours an exceptional Guinness. Travelodge Birmingham Maypole is a no-frills motorway pitstop with a Sainsbury's next door and the M42 six minutes away.
If you want character, community roots, and a hotel with a genuine reason to exist, one of these delivers. If you want the cheapest functional bed south of Birmingham with free parking and EV charging, the other wins. Choosing the wrong one is a real risk. Read on.
The Arrival Reality
Pairc House Hotel: Warm, Calm, and Immediately WelcomingArriving at Pairc House is a genuinely pleasant experience for anyone arriving by car. You turn into the driveway and the building reads as polished, modern, and immediately welcoming. The frontage has warmth rather than anonymity. The car park is on-site, free, and extensive, the kind of space that accommodates a whole sports and events complex, not just a hotel. You will not circle looking for a space.
The entrance is unmissable from the forecourt. Lighting is adequate after dark. CCTV is visible. The street is quiet by day and lively when the Irish Centre bar and events spaces open in the evenings. Arriving by taxi is equally smooth, drop-off is directly outside the entrance with no complications and no navigation stress.
The caveat is rail travellers. If you are arriving by train into Birmingham New Street and expecting to walk, that is not a realistic option. The hotel is south of the city centre in an outer-residential zone. A taxi from the station is the only practical approach with luggage. The nearest bus stop is Ardencote Road, a five-minute walk, which works for those with light bags and patience, but a taxi remains the far better choice.
Travelodge Birmingham Maypole: Functional, But Easy to MissThe Travelodge Maypole is best arrived at by car, and for drivers it mostly works, once you know where you are going. The hotel has approximately 45 on-site spaces including four dedicated EV charging bays, all free. You register your registration at reception. The car park itself is straightforward once you are in it.
The problem is finding it. The car park entrance is a small side road next to the Subway, with no advance signage visible from the main road. On first visit, you may drive past it. The hotel building itself is similarly easy to walk past without knowing what you are looking for. Once you have been once, it is fine. First-timers, approach slowly and look for the Subway on your left.
Exiting the car park during busy periods requires patience, the surrounding arterial road and roundabout get congested at peak commuting times. Taxi arrivals are the simplest option: the drop-off is flat, step-free, and immediate. Train arrivals, as with Pairc House, require a taxi from Birmingham city centre stations. There is no nearby rail option. The Maypole Lane bus stop is a one-minute walk, which is useful for occasional trips into the centre, but this is fundamentally a car-based hotel.
Arrival Winner: Pairc House Hotel. The welcome is warmer, the car park is easier to navigate, and the entrance is genuinely unmissable.
The Location Trade-Off
Pairc House Hotel- South of Birmingham city centre in a quiet outer-residential setting
- On-site Irish bar, wellbeing centre, Pat Benson Boxing Club, and banqueting suite, all within the same complex
- Green space within two minutes of the entrance
- Nearest bus stop (Ardencote Road) is a five-minute walk
- Outside Birmingham's Clean Air Zone, meaningful saving for older or diesel vehicles
- Pete's Pan restaurant approximately 15 minutes on foot for food outside the hotel
- Not within walking distance of Birmingham city centre, New Street, or Broad Street
- A destination hotel, you go there on purpose, not because it is convenient for everything else
- Outer south Birmingham on a busy arterial roundabout junction
- M42 approximately eight minutes away by car, ideal for motorway travellers
- Sainsbury's one minute on foot, Aldi three minutes, Starbucks and Subway within three minutes
- Green space adjacent to Alcester Road South within approximately four minutes on foot
- Maypole Lane bus stop one minute from the hotel
- Outside Birmingham's Clean Air Zone
- No character, no cultural identity, no reason to be here unless you specifically need to be
- Not within walking distance of anything that makes Birmingham worth visiting
Location Winner: Pairc House Hotel. The Travelodge wins on motorway proximity; Pairc House wins on everything else. If your reason to be in south Birmingham is the Irish Centre, there is no competition. If your reason is the M42, the Travelodge has the edge. For most guests, Pairc House offers a more purposeful and rewarding location.
The Parking Reality
Both hotels offer free on-site parking, which is a meaningful advantage over city-centre alternatives that charge £20 or more per night. Both sit outside Birmingham's Clean Air Zone, removing the daily charge burden for older or diesel vehicles. On those fundamentals, they are evenly matched.
The difference is scale and ease. Pairc House has extensive on-site parking built to serve a multi-building complex, a hotel, boxing club, banqueting suite, and wellbeing centre all share the site. Space is rarely a problem. The entrance is visible and the layout is simple.
The Travelodge has approximately 45 spaces including four EV charging bays. That number is adequate for a Travelodge but tighter, and the car park entrance (a small side road next to the Subway) is easy to miss on arrival. Pulling out onto the main arterial road during peak hours requires patience.
Pairc House also includes accessible parking spaces at no charge. The Travelodge's EV charging provision gives it a specific advantage for electric vehicle drivers that Pairc House does not currently match.
Parking Winner: Pairc House Hotel for scale and ease. Travelodge for EV drivers specifically.
The Price Reality
The Travelodge Birmingham Maypole is in the budget bracket (£). Pairc House Hotel is in the mid-range bracket (££). That gap matters if your sole priority is the cheapest bed south of Birmingham, and on pure price-per-night the Travelodge wins without discussion.
But price is not the same as value. At Pairc House, the premium buys you a new-build hotel with genuine character, an on-site bar, access to a wellbeing centre and boxing club, and a cultural atmosphere that no Travelodge can manufacture. At the Travelodge, you get a clean functional room, free parking, and a Sainsbury's next door.
For guests attending an Irish Centre event, the Pairc House premium is irrelevant, no other hotel can place you on site. For guests simply breaking a motorway journey, the Travelodge's lower price is entirely justified. Match the price point to the purpose.
Price Winner: Travelodge Birmingham Maypole on headline rate. Pairc House Hotel on value for the right guest.
The Use-Case Verdicts
For Irish Centre Events, Boxing Shows, and Community OccasionsWinner: Pairc House Hotel, and it is not close.
Pairc House is the only hotel in Birmingham where guests attending Irish Centre events, weddings, cultural gatherings, Pat Benson Boxing Club shows, community banquets, are sleeping on site. There is no taxi home after a late function, no midnight scramble for a car. You are already there. The Travelodge cannot compete with this on any level.
For Drivers Breaking a Long JourneyWinner: Travelodge Birmingham Maypole.
The M42 is eight minutes away. Free parking, a Sainsbury's for supplies, a Starbucks for the morning, and a budget price make this the obvious pitstop choice. Pairc House is further from motorway access and costs more, it is not optimised for the transit traveller.
For Business Travel by CarWinner: Pairc House Hotel for south Birmingham meetings; Travelodge for M42 corridor business.
Both offer free parking and Clean Air Zone freedom. Pairc House provides a more professional and comfortable environment with a wellbeing centre for longer stays. The Travelodge is better if your meetings are further south or along the motorway corridor and you need to move on quickly.
For a Romantic WeekendWinner: Pairc House Hotel.
Unexpectedly, Pairc House delivers genuine character, an Irish-themed bar with a strong Guinness reputation, a wellbeing centre on the doorstep, and a calm residential setting. For a couple who want personality over corporate polish and are happy to drive to dinner, this works. The Travelodge offers a roundabout and a Subway. Romance it is not.
For FamiliesWinner: Pairc House Hotel.
Both hotels are in residential, relatively calm settings. Pairc House offers more on-site variety, the boxing club context, outdoor sports facilities, and a broader campus to explore. The Travelodge is functional and pushchair-friendly, but the main arterial road and roundabout make it a less comfortable base for families with young children wanting to stretch their legs.
For Dog OwnersWinner: Travelodge Birmingham Maypole, confirmed dog-friendly at £25 per stay, with green space within four minutes on foot. Pairc House has green space within two minutes, but its sporting grounds are geared towards organised sports use rather than casual dog walks. Confirm pet policy directly with Pairc House before booking, as this was not verified during the site visit.
For EV DriversWinner: Travelodge Birmingham Maypole.
The Travelodge has four dedicated EV charging bays in the on-site car park, confirmed during a site visit. Pairc House does not currently list EV charging as a facility. For guests who need to charge overnight, the Travelodge is the clear choice.
For Budget-Conscious TravellersWinner: Travelodge Birmingham Maypole.
At the budget (£) price point versus Pairc House's mid-range (££), the Travelodge is the obvious choice for guests whose primary concern is cost. The Sainsbury's and Aldi nearby make self-catering breakfast easy, saving further on top of the lower room rate.
The Hero Verdict
These two hotels share a postcode quadrant and a free car park. That is where the similarity ends.
Pairc House Hotel is a destination with a reason to exist beyond processing overnight guests. It is the newly built home of Birmingham's Irish Centre, a community institution with deep roots, a world-famous boxing club, an on-site wellbeing centre, and a bar that earns its reputation. Staying here means staying somewhere, not just anywhere. The building is new, clean, and immediately welcoming. The atmosphere is genuine. For the right guest, this is one of the most characterful hotels in the city.
The Travelodge Birmingham Maypole is a well-executed pitstop. It does exactly what it says: clean room, free parking, EV charging, Sainsbury's next door, M42 eight minutes away. There is no atmosphere to speak of, no cultural identity, and no reason to stay here unless you specifically need to be in this part of south Birmingham. But if you do need to be here, if you are breaking a long drive, visiting family in the area, or working the M42 corridor, it delivers without drama and at a price that makes sense.
The risk of getting this wrong is real. Book the Travelodge hoping for character and you will be disappointed by a roundabout. Book Pairc House expecting motorway convenience and you may find yourself further from the M42 than you planned.
Book Pairc House Hotel if:

- You are a couple looking for somewhere with an on-site bar, wellbeing centre, and real atmosphere rather than corporate polish
- You value extensive, easy, free parking over budget pricing
- You want to be outside the Clean Air Zone without sacrificing a sense of place
Book Travelodge Birmingham Maypole if:
- You are breaking a long drive and need the cheapest clean bed within easy reach of the M42
- You are visiting family or friends in outer south Birmingham and want a practical, affordable base
- You drive an electric vehicle and need overnight charging on a budget
- Your priority is the lowest possible price with free parking and no frills
- You are a car-based business traveller working the M42 corridor and need to move on fast
- You are travelling with a dog and want confirmed pet-friendly accommodation with green space nearby
The Bottom Line: The Travelodge Maypole is a tool. Pairc House is a place. Both do their jobs well. The question is which job you actually need done.
